Well Dick, it was a difficult weekend for me as your bumbling general counsel and PR staffs continue to make gaffe after gaffe. Now I am told, their brilliant 1st Amendment-trampling lawsuit against 30 “John Does” is making headline after headline in newspapers across the country. One of my distant friends reported that you made front page news in Sunday’s Flint, MI Journal. Apparently they picked it up because Orrin Woodward resides in the county that paper serves. My closest neighbor asked me today; “Are these people truly that stupid or are they running amuck under orders from the DeVos family?” I was too tired to answer. He knows my answer. And he pressed me with, “When are you going to give up trying to defend the undefendable Dick DeVos? Surely by now you have to admit defeat Sam.” That got my juices going!
“DEFEAT?!” I bellowed. “I am many things Phil, but a QUITTER is not one of them! I shall NEVER admit defeat and turn my back on this decent man! That’s the sort of thing people who have no character and no guts would do! Until it is proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the DeVos family had, has, ANYTHING to do with this sordid affair, I shall remain firm in my belief otherwise!”
I was astounded when all he did was laugh.
I was about to toss him out when he apologized for laughing and said, “Sam, I do appreciate your loyalty to the man. It is an admirable thing. I hope I could expect the same from you if I ever found myself in a jam.” “Of course!” I replied. “You are a friend Phil, and unfortunately, true friends are rare in the extreme.”
“I appreciate that.” he said. “But Sam, look at the facts here. Every time Quixtar execs give testimony in court, they look worse than ridiculous. They sound like, well frankly, like liars and like they have something to hide.”
“What ARE you talking about Phil?!” I asked.
He answered, “Last week I received, from an unnamed source, transcripts from the 3 day trial in Judge Sullivan’s Grand Rapids courtroom which took place October 15th through 17th, and which makes for some VERY interesting reading!”
“I hope that Quixtar’s Gary VanderVen isn’t an example of the typical Quixtar executive because frankly Sam, he doesn’t appear to be the sharpest knife in the drawer. And that reflects poorly on your buddy, Dick.”
I asked him to stop and I told him that if he really did have copies of those documents, I wanted to see them for myself.
He gleefully agreed to return with them tomorrow, “So you can see for yourself Sam what a bunch of birdbrains the DeVos family has employed; beavering away in their insipid attempt to bury Orrin Woodward and the ‘Team’. What they are doing to these people makes them look spiteful, stupid and arrogant and will have the unhappy, for you Sam, effect of insuring that your friend, Dick DeVos will NEVER be able to run for public office. Dick DeVos is being made to look the FOOL! He is the OWNER!!” And with that he turned to leave.
Good thing too, because I was getting angrier and angrier. I silently opened the front door. Guessing (correctly) that I was put out by my thin-lipped hardened expression, he passed hurriedly by my outstretched arm. Averting his eyes from my steely gaze, he muttered to himself, “You’ll see. You’ll see.”
On the first step though, he whirled about and with wild eyes exclaimed, “Wait a minute! Wait just a gol-durn minute! On second thought Sam, with the kind of credentials his attorneys are procuring for him, DeVos COULD run, and would probably get elected....as a DEMOCRAT!!”
I slammed the door as he ran chortling down the rest of the steps.
